Getting Started

To begin creating your FlexBook, you will want to sign in. You will need to be signed in if you wish to save any of your work. The sign in link can be found in the top right corner of http://www.ck12.org. If you have not yet created an account, click Register in the top right corner.


From http://www.ck12.org, you may begin by:

  • clicking one of the subject area links to search that term
  • entering your own search term
  • clicking Create FlexBook or Create Chapter (to start from scratch)
  • clicking on one of the Featured Books in our Library by browsing the carousel






Browse FlexBooks Library


  1. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the carousel to scroll through the CK-12 Library.
  2. Hover over the book image to select one of the textbooks.
  3. Click "View FlexBook" or "Read"
    ...Please wait a moment while the book chapters are loaded.


Search

The Search page consists of 3 sections. From left to right they include: The Narrow Your Search section, the Search Results section, and the mini-FlexBook Editor section where you compile chapters into your FlexBook.

Preview a Chapter in HTML

From the list of search results that appear in the Chapters tab, click on the Chapter Title or click Action ->View Details to review its contents.



A new browser window will pop open (note: your pop up blockers may required to be turned off)
You can preview the chapter here (rendered in HTML).
You can decide if you like it and wish to keep the chapter in the book. You will need to close this window in order to return to the search results and add the chapter to your book.



Add Content to your FlexBook

To add content to your FlexBook, you select your Book/Chapter/Web results and add them to the mini-FlexBook Editor on the right hand side of the screen. So how do I add content to the mini-FlexBook Editor?

Option 1: Click 'Action --> Add to FlexBook

Option 2: Drag and drop the book/chapter/web search result into the mini-FlexBook Editor.


  • To drag and drop, click a book/chapter/web result and – while pressing the mouse button – drag to the right into the FlexBook Editor. Release the mouse to drop the item into the FlexBook Editor.


Please Note: Even if you do not want to add all of the content from a particular chapter, you still must add the entire chapter to your FlexBook. You will be able to edit and delete unwanted content when you adapt your content.


Edit FlexBook Details

  1. Select Edit this Book from the mini-FlexBook Editor on the right hand side. This will expand the FlexBook Editor to the full screen. See below.
  1. In the FlexBook Editor (see below), the accordion on the right side allows you to add a title, description, and tags or keywords to your FlexBook.

Sequence

Here in the FlexBook Editor, you can resequence the chapters of your FlexBook by dragging and dropping them (see below) in the order you prefer. To drag and drop, click and hold the mouse button down. Then drag the item into the desired position.


The buttons across the top of the FlexBook Editor allow you to:

- Save to your Library

- Print or Publish a .pdf

- Delete your FlexBook

Edit Chapter Content

  • Select Action-->Edit in the FlexBook Editor and you will be taken to the Chapter Editor for whichever Chapter you selected.
  • Here you may edit the content.
  • The toolbar across the top shows what functions are available. Some exciting new features worth noting are:
  1. insert/edit image
  2. insert/edit youtube video
  3. print preview
  4. symbol editor
  5. toggle to full screen

FlexBook Editor: Saving, Printing, Deleting, and Sharing

From within the FlexBook Editor you may....

  • Save: Once you have completed editing, save your FlexBook by selecting Save.
  • Print: Once you are ready to generate and print your FlexBook, select Print.
    • You can also print from My Library under the My Books tab.
  • Delete: If you would like to delete your FlexBook, select Delete from the menu at the top of the screen.
  • Share: If you would like to share your FlexBook with the entire CK-12 community, select Share.
    • This action will prompt you to submit your FlexBook to CK-12 in which in will be vetted by CK-12 domain experts to determine if we will add it to the CK-12 repository.


Sharing Your Generated FlexBook

Once you have printed (generated) your FlexBook it will appear under the My Print Center tab within My Library.

  • In this window you can "View" your FlexBook with our online viewer (html), "Read" your flexBook with our online reader, or "Download" your FlexBook to your computer as a PDF.

To SHARE books digitally:

  1. Right click on View, Read, or Download
  2. Select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy link location"
  3. Paste the link on your webpage, into your syllabus, or in an email!

To SHARE books in hardcopy:

  1. Select Download
  2. FlexBook file will download to your computer as a PDF
  3. Save FlexBook file
  4. Print as needed
